When the government of Canada, at the close of the eighteenth century, by formation of the quasi-naval establishment known as the Provincial Marine, began ship navigation on the Great Lakes for the benefit of commerce generally, fur traders immediately took advantage of the service. The accommodation was provided on Lakes Ontario, Erie, Huron and Michigan.
